The Demands of Basketball

To play basketball requires that each player has the required physical qualities to meet the demands of the game.  

Basketball is an extremely dynamic sport, with the age, playing level, and position effecting the overall demands.  Players can cover over 7,000 metres per game (younger players will cover less) and perform a series of different movement actions.   Basketball is typically viewed as both an aerobic/anaerobic game, with players performing a high number of short-sprints.  Other player performance characteristics, include - 

  • Jumping and landing strategies 

  • Repeat sprint ability 

  • Agility, cutting and change of direction at speed  

  • Accelerations and decelerations 

  • Moderate to high-speed running 

Through regular strength and conditioning training, this can prepare each player to be sport ready and meet the demands of the game.  By being prepared for their sport, players can play with confidence and express their individual qualities in the game  –  improvements in recovery and repeat sprint ability throughout the game.  Improvements in acceleration and declaration -  optimal jumping and landing ability – overall better agility and cutting for performance.

Reduce the Risk of Injuries in Basketball

The injury rates in youth players are increasing, with most injuries being classified as overuse or sport-related injuries. 

A general lack of preparation and high volumes of sports-training (sport practice and competition) can place the youth player at a higher risk of overtraining, feelings of burnout, and sustaining an injury. 

In the game of basketball, players report a high level of injuries to their lower limbs, with the ankle and foot being frequently injured.  Players also report a high number of knee injures, with female players reporting 72% more than male players. 

As basketball is a high-dynamic team game, having an excellent aerobic base will help with repeat-sprints ability and recovery.  A high level of relative strength is correlated with acceleration and change of direction at speed.  To help basketball players reduce the risk of injuries (a reduction of injuries by 36%), It is suggested that they perform strength and conditioning that integrates neuromuscular training

The Youth Strength & Conditioning app empowers each youth athlete to regularly perform their strength and conditioning training. 

Strength and conditioning programmes are fully automated to save time.   Each programme consists of a range of exercises, including neuromuscular training.  Athletes can watch the exercise and drills, which demonstrate optimal form and technique. 

Athletes can upload the repetitions, training loads, and effort level, which is synched to the coach’s portal, allowing the coach to analyse training volume and adherence.

Player Recovery

The importance of player wellbeing and recovery are essential for the growth and development of each player. 

To reduce the risk of high-volumes of sport training and competition, overtraining, and feelings of burnout, players can track their wellbeing and overall recovery. 

Created for youth players, the youth players complete weekly questionnaires that monitor key areas 

  • Overall fatigue level 

  • Muscle soreness 

  • Energy levels 

  • Motivation 

  • Sleep quality and feelings of freshness
